WHAT THE HECK IS A DRAPPELLONE??
It is the name of the actual 'Palio,' the painted banner that is handed to the winner of the race. Each year the banner is painted specifically for that Palio. It is shaped like a long rectangle and usually has symbols of each contrada and the stemma of Siena. Each contrada saves their winning drappellone in their museum. When I went to Siena, I saw these drappellone in Bruco's Museum. These are dated to the 1700s. WOW!
It's a big deal.
Examples of past drappellone in Siena:
Our drappellone last year:
Last year we had a great design & this year we want YOU to come up with your own idea.
You can design it all on the computer or you can paint or draw your own idea and scan/photograph it, or a little bit of both. Keep in mind that the resolution needs to be big enough for us to print it banner size (300dpi).
2 things it NEEDS to show:
representation of all the contrade, and say somewhere "Il Palio di BYU Inverno 2012."
HINTS:
Gain inspiration from the examples shown above, display Siena's history and culture, and be creative.
Then submit your pic to byuitalianclub@gmail.com.
DEADLINE: MARCH 27th
We'll choose the top submissions and then that week we will hold a poll voting thing on the blog and everyone will vote! The winner will receive recognition at the palio and some sort of great prize (giftcard possibly or something along the lines, we aren't sure what yet).
